Probiotics For Colon Health
Yuri Elkaim, BPHE, CK, RHN & Amy Coates, RHN, BSc.
Probiotics are live microbes like those normally found in the gastrointestinal (colon) tract of healthy humans. Infants fed on breast milk have the highest amount of these microbes, while the average healthy human has large colonies of them living throughout the gastrointestinal tract, below the stomach, where stomach acids cannot destroy them.
These microbes do the job of breaking down matter that the stomach acids could not handle, and protecting the blood from harmful microorganisms. Like all living things, they are totally dependent on their environment, and when the human diet creates conditions that are too acidic, or when a person takes antibiotics, the body-friendly microbes die off.
In the presence of poor diet, or after taking antibiotics, it becomes necessary to cleanse the body and then replace the friendly microbes, or flora, in the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotics are the way to do this. Probiotics contain live samples of the friendly bacteria that naturally reside in healthy bodies. Once the body becomes balanced and clean, we can take probiotics, and they can live and help us heal and digest once more.
How do intestinal flora keep the colon healthy? It is quite simple. In the normal human intestinal tract, intestinal flora break down and process things that the stomach cannot process. If the digestive system were a factory, the stomach would be a machine, responsible for general break down of foods and extraction of nutrients, but the gastrointestinal tract would be more like a human worker; discerning, breaking down, and extracting certain nutrients, while blocking and eliminating harmful matter. Without the friendly flora in our colons, we loose valuable nutrients from plant foods, and valuable protection against the build-up of fecal matter, parasites, and harmful bacterial colonies that can proliferate in the absence of friendly flora.
For these reasons and more, probiotics are serious health aids. Upsets in the intestinal flora have been linked to stomach and colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, and much more.
So many of the foods we eat are missing living enzymes or have them destroyed through cooking. In addition, people often take antibiotics, or have diets that make their bodies too acidic for intestinal flora to live.
Cleansing your body and replacing the friendly flora with probiotics can, therefore, have many positive effects on your health. These flora will aid in food break down and elimination and protect the lining of your colon from harmful substances. They can also clear out fecal matter and increase healthy bowel movements, making probiotics an essential part of the cleansing process.
