How To Heal Leaky Gut Syndrome
Yuri Elkaim, BPHE, CK, RHN & Amy Coates, RHN, BSc.
Leaky gut syndrome is a condition of altered or damaged bowel lining, caused by poor diet, antibiotics, toxins, parasites or infection. It can lead to increased permeability of the gut wall to toxins, microbes, undigested food, waste or larger than normal macromolecules.
Leaky gut syndrome is very common yet, it is kind of hard to treat and capable of leading to many serious conditions. Many experts, especially doctors now accept as true that the gastrointestinal tract is accountable for proper maintenance of the immune system and that any abnormality in its functions can make the body become vulnerable to many diseases, most especially autoimmune diseases. Although many practitioners maintain that leaky gut syndrome is a true medical condition, this area of "gut problems" still lies between conservative and unorthodox medicine, and includes other diagnoses such as small bowel bacterial overgrowth syndrome or small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and yeast syndrome or systemic candidiasis, and remains controversial and scientifically unsettled.
The first step you should take when you want to cure leaky gut syndrome is to carry out a bowel cleanse and start an antioxidant-rich diet. Of course, I assume you have come across many different kinds of bowel cleanses by now, nevertheless, I recommend that you do some research to know which one is safe, effective and healthy for you. Whichever one you may want to take, a natural cleanse is the best and I advise strongly that you look into it before any other. Diets containing antioxidants are essential in our day to day meals, particularly for those that have intestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, which is thought to be caused by leaky gut syndrome.
The colon cleansing usually removes the beneficial bacterial culture from your gut, therefore, make sure you introduce again immediately you finish the cleansing. You may want to use supplements like acidophilus or lactobacillus or even yogurt, because these are very good sources of these probiotics.
It is very risky to your health if you do not reintroduce these bacteria into your system. Also, you want to avoid eating sugars and starches in your diets because they provide nourishment to the yeasts that are responsible for the leaky gut syndrome you are trying to fight.
Don’t forget healthy fat such as omega-3’s (fish oil, flaxseed oil) are important in your diet as they help to lessen inflammation in the body. It is also helpful to add digestive enzymes with your meals to help your body digest food in the most beneficial manner.
Finally, remember to eliminate the parasites living in your intestines, using natural therapies such as eating raw garlic and/or taking oregano oil or caprylic acid.
