Colon Cleansing Diet Meal Plan
Yuri Elkaim, BPHE, CK, RHN & Amy Coates, RHN, BSc.
Are you constantly tired and irritable? If so, it may be time to cleanse your colon. By sticking to a colon cleansing diet meal plan you will be able to rid your body of toxins, chemicals and fats that are being stored in your tissues. This waste enters our body through the foods that we eat. Items such as fish contain high amounts of metal that also contaminate our bodies. By practicing specific habits that help aid digestion, we allow our bodies to absorb more toxins while it remains longer in the digestive tract. Colon cleansing is easy. All it takes is a few changes in what you eat and drink to help detoxify your body.
To start any colon cleansing diet meal plan it is important to fast for at least 24 hours. Allow your body to only have water or 100% fruit juices. This process gears the digestive system up for the new healthy nutrients it is about to receive. For breakfast you should only eat fruit. If you think you will be hungry, fear not. Fruits contain high amounts of fiber which help curb hunger. Fruits also contain very little fat as well as high water content. When you start on a colon cleansing diet it is ideal to drink a lot of water. A person should drink half their body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds then you should drink at least 60 ounces of water each day. Drinking water helps flush the toxins out of your system. Fruits such as blueberries are perfect for a colon cleansing diet. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants to help prevent free radical damage in your body. Bananas are another great option. The potassium in bananas is perfect for relieving leg cramp pain.
For lunch and dinner the most important detail is to not mix carbohydrates with proteins. When you eat steak (protein) and potatoes (carbohydrates) you cause your body to release two different digestive enzymes. These enzymes partially negate each other which cause digestion to slow. Some alternative meal options are:
- Steak with salad and a slice of bread
- Pasta with sauce (no meat) and a side salad
- Grilled chicken with steamed asparagus
- Chicken Ceaser Salad
During any meal you should drink a beverage that is warm. Drinking cold beverages slows digestion. For the best results with a colon cleansing diet meal plan you should avoid alcohol, processed foods and sugars. Caffeine is also an item that should be avoided. If you need a pick me up then reach for herbal teas or green juice. These alternatives are naturally caffeine free and help re-build your bodys’ natural energy source. Also avoid products with gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barely. It is a key ingredient in white pastas and bread. This protein is the reason we feel weighed down after a heavy meal. Try quinoa or rice pasta and breads as an alternative.
